What Does The Future Hold For These Five Chelsea Players?

While the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tiemoue Bakayoko were offloaded before the transfer window closed, there were also a number of players who stayed at Chelsea this summer who may have otherwise been sold.

Manager Frank Lampard will be mindful of the fact that he won’t want fringe players unsettling the dressing room so it remains to be seen how many of them will be reintegrated into the first team squad.

Five players, in particular, have big question marks over whether they can turnaround their careers in the coming months. They may be destined to have bit-part roles or even be sent to languish in the reserves.

Press the next page as we assess what the future may hold for these Chelsea stars.

Marcos Alonso

After reportedly clashing with Lampard at half-time in the 3-3 draw against West Brom, the Spaniard wasn’t even in the squad for the 4-0 win against Crystal Palace last weekend.

It remains to be seen, though, whether Alonso has played his last game for the Blues, with reports suggesting that Emerson could yet still leave the club in the coming weeks.

Antonio Rudiger

The situation surrounding the German international is a bit strange. Some reports suggested that Chelsea would only sanction a loan move if he signed a new deal due to the fact that he is less than two years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge. Having refused to do so the centre-back opted to stay.

However, there have also been claims that Rudiger would have been allowed to leave, irrespective of his contract situation, with it being suggested that he backed out of a loan move to Tottenham due to fears over a fan backlash.

Emerson Palmieri

Porto are reportedly still considering whether to make a loan move for the Italian. The Portuguese transfer window shuts on October 25th and they have more time to make their decision.

After losing Alex Telles to Manchester United, they do need a left-back so Emerson could well make the switch to Portugal in the coming weeks.

Fikayo Tomori

West Ham reportedly tried to sign the centre-half on loan before the transfer window closed last night. However, the England international opted against a move to the London Stadium as he wants to fight for his place.

With Lampard having made him fourth-choice centre-back, ahead of Rudiger, the likelihood is we will only see him in cup competitions or if there is an injury.

Jorginho

Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain were linked with the midfielder before deadline day, but there was never a concrete offer on the table for the player. Were that to change, it’s likely he will be offloaded in order for the Blues to fund their move for West Ham’s Declan Rice.

Jorginho has played pretty regularly in the opening weeks of the season but that may change when Billy Gilmour regains fitness after his knee injury.
