What Does The Future Hold For John Terry?

What Does The Future Hold For John Terry?

It was a sad day at Stamford Bridge when JT announced he was not offered a contract extension and that his future as a Chelsea man is no longer something to think about. The captain announced that he will be leaving at the end of the season, news that came down hard on all those who love this player who dedicated 18 years of his life to the Blue shirt. Currently 35 Terry has at least one or two good years left in him. Playing a full season for the Premier League champions last year is not something to get over easily. It`s clear that his mental and physical states are out of the ordinary and that he would be capable of holding his own for one or two more years. After the emotional interview given by Terry after the draw against United, a lot of clubs took interest in the man who has played 667 games for Chelsea. Currently, if we take into consideration the fact that Zouma could be out for the first couple of months of the next Premier League season, Terry has 4 directions he could head in:

  1. CSL – if he wants to make big money he will have to get used to a different time-zone. The Chinese Super League is looking like the new El Dorado of football. Ramires, Teixeira and Jackson Martinez have already pretty much suspended their careers and chose money over performance. With probably the biggest salaries in the world, the Chinese could be keen on signing Terry. The problem is that they mostly focus on attacking players. Even so, JT could still make around £200.000 – £300.000 a week for the next two years. He also has the opportunity of working with Scolari or Eriksson who are both managing teams in the CSL.
  2. MLS – according to NBC, Terry has already been contacted by at least one MLS club. It`s well known that big names like Beckham, Henry, Villa, and most importantly Drogba and Lampard have moved to the US to retire. Having the chance of getting reunited with either of the two would be very tempting.
  3. West Ham – Terry started his youth career for West Ham and stayed about 4 years with the Hammers. This is probably the longest shot when it comes to JT’s future as it is hard to believe he will ever play for another team other than Chelsea. On the other hand, that`s what we thought about Lampard and he ended up playing for City. Either way, it would probably be the hardest choice to make for Terry and the hardest to cope with by Chelsea fans.
  4. Chelsea – Best case scenario, Terry stays with Chelsea for what will probably the last season of his career. The captain deserves it. Given the recent events – Zouma’s horrific injury – Chelsea would need a center-back to handle at least part of the games for next season. Hopefully JT stays healthy in order to help the Blues get back where they belong which is on top of the Premier League.

No matter what happens, one thing is for sure: Terry is a club legend and will always be remembered at Stamford Bridge and it is guaranteed that no matter what happens the club will treat the whole situation with total class and JT with absolute dignity as they did with Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.
