What Do Chelsea Need This Summer

What Do Chelsea Need This Summer

How do you improve the Premier League champions? Sky Sports took a look at which positions Jose Mourinho needs to strengthen this summer. Their list is fairly vague, and has left me wondering what Chelsea fans closer to home would be looking for.

Like many, I watched Chelsea dominate the league last season. They have one of the best squads in Europe with players on loan scattered all over the place, along with a youth academy that’s second to none. The Blues were a side that were unlucky not to contend further in the Champions League, in my opinion, and had they have made the Semi-Finals of the competition I think it is fair to say the media would look at them in a much different light.

So lets take a look at each position Jose might look to add to, for each, I’ll give a list of players who could be well suited to the role.

Striker

With Didier Drogba making his final exit from the club, and Loic Remy looking likely to follow, it is almost certain that Chelsea will add another striker to their ranks.

Radamel Falcao is the main man to be linked with a move to Chelsea, the Colombian is likely to join on a loan deal, which would eventually be made permanent.

Dortmund striker Aubameyang is another name linked with a move to London, a pacey striker who has an eye for goal.

Sky Sports also claim that QPR striker Charlie Austin could be an option, but I’m unsure he’s the type of striker Chelsea are looking for.

Centre-back

Chelsea have the best defence in the league, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be bolstered. Their defence is also ageing, with Terry at the now tender age of 34.

There are many centre backs linked with a move to Chelsea, but these 3 I believe would be better suited with a move.

Raphael Varane is the main man on everyone’s lips at the moment. He is without a doubt the hottest defending prospects in Europe. At just 22, he has already established himself as a Real Madrid first team player, and a full France international. Mourinho was the man who gave Varane a chance in Real’s first team, and the Portuguese has remained an admirer ever since.

John Stones would also be a good addition to the Chelsea back line. A young, but experienced defender, the Everton centre back can surely only get better. The Englishman would also be a valuable addition due to his homegrown status.

Atletico Madrid star Miranda has been linked with a move to Chelsea for as long as I remember, a solid player who would certainly make a difference at Chelsea.

Attacking midfield

Chelsea’s midfield is one of the best in the league. But that shouldn’t stop new additions coming in and rattling the competition.

Raheem Sterling is said to be on Jose Mourinho’s radar this summer, and the Englishman would be a good signing for many reasons. At just 20, Sterling still has a far way to go to show his full potential.

Marek Hamsik is another name linked with a move to Chelsea. The Slovakian has made his name as one of the best in his position in Italy, and a move to Chelsea would surely raise more eyebrows at the Blues’ ever-growing list of star players.

Douglas Costa. The attacking midfielder is a star for both Shakhtar and Brazil, and wouldn’t go amiss in a Chelsea shirt either.
