Werner Included, Jorginho Misses Out: Chelsea’s 2020/21 Team Of The Season

It has been a rollercoaster ride for Chelsea supporters over the course of the season. The low of Frank Lampard’s sacking in January contrasted massively with lifting the Champions League in May.

Nobody will be forgetting the 2020/21 campaign in a hurry, and we thought the time is now right to put together our team of the season.

It was actually surprisingly easy to select our eleven, as although a lot of players have been used over the course of the campaign, particular names have stood out.

Press the next page as we name our best team for the 2020/21 season.

GK – Edouard Mendy

The 29-year-old has been an inspired signing and one that has to be credited to Petr Cech, who recommended that the Blues snap up the keeper from Rennes.

Mendy let in just 30 goals in 45 games, whilst also keeping an extremely impressive 25 clean sheets in all competitions.

RWB – Reece James

47 appearances last season sums up how important the fullback has become for Chelsea. Considering it was only just over two years ago that he was playing on loan in the Championship with Wigan, that is some achievement.

James has been hailed for his attacking attributes as a wingback, but his dominant display against Raheem Sterling in the Champions League final shows that he is also an excellent defender.

CB – Cesar Azpilicueta

The Spaniard was seemingly being phased out under Frank Lampard, with the manager favouring four at the back, but the arrival of Tuchel breathed new life into his Chelsea career.

Playing on the right of a back three (a position that he excelled in under Antonio Conte), Azpilicueta has remerged as a first-team regular.

CB – Thiago Silva

After a slow start, hampered by fitness problems, the Brazilian established himself as a key figure for both Lampard and Tuchel.

Silva is certainly showing some signs of his age, but he still possesses excellent anticipation, and his experience has proved vital in improving what was, up until very recently, a shaky backline.

CB – Antonio Rudiger

The German turned down a loan move to rivals Tottenham at the start of the season and he struggled to get any games up until the New Year, but the change of manager transformed his season.

Rudiger has made the left-sided centre-back position his own, playing with aggression without the ball and ambition when in possession. The 28-year-old has been a key lieutenant for Tuchel.

LWB – Ben Chilwell

The switch to a back five did lead to a period of adjustment for the £50m summer signing and, while he did have to fight off a surprise challenge from Marcos Alonso for his first-team place after the New Year, he has now firmly re-established himself as the number one left wingback.

At 24 years of age, there is still scope for Chilwell to improve further, and that is an exciting prospect considering he managed four goals and seven assists in all competitions.

CM – N’Golo Kante

The Frenchman, once again, had to battle fitness problems over the course of the season, but he was involved in the games that mattered most.

Kante was everywhere in the Champions League final and Tuchel is certainly right to claim that Chelsea are a different beast when he is in the starting eleven.

CM – Mateo Kovacic

While Jorginho may have provided a few more goals from the penalty spot, the Italian’s inconsistent form means we have opted to go with Kovacic in our team of the year instead.

The Croatian’s performances were praised during the opening weeks of Tuchel’s reign and, while injury has hampered him somewhat since then, he will surely be a key player for Chelsea next season.

RW – Mason Mount

Undoubtedly the most consistent player throughout the whole season. The midfielder has silenced any critics with his displays both under Lampard and Tuchel.

There was an element of doubt that Mount would be as important under Tuchel, when the German left him out of his starting lineup for his first game, but, since then, he has been everpresent in the first eleven.

CF – Kai Havertz

It would have been hard not to include him considering he served up the defining moment of the season by scoring the winner in the Champions League final!

Havertz has, however, had a mixed bag of a first season at Stamford Bridge and it will be hoped his goal in Porto will provide the springboard for him to go on to greater things.

LW – Timo Werner

Nobody would say the German has lived up to expectations this campaign, but he has still arguably performed better than the likes of Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Werner missed a hatful of gilt-edged chances despite still being a key figure in Chelsea’s attacking play, scoring 12 goals and contributing 15 assists. The German needs to find a clinical edge next campaign.
