Werder Bremen Waiting In The Wings For Chelsea Midfielder

Even though Chelsea signed Kevin De Bruyne in January 2012, the Belgian made his first appearance for the Blues only in the current 2013-14 season. The attacking midfielder was signed from Belgian club Racing Genk for a fee reported to be in the region of £7 million, but was immediately loaned out to them for the remainder of the 2011-12 season.

In order to continue his development, De Bruyne spent last season on loan at German club Werder Bremen, where he matured as a player and started performing consistently. The 22-year-old enjoyed a stellar season at Weserstadoin, scoring 10 goals and providing a further 10 assists in 34 appearances for the club.

On arriving for his second stint as Chelsea manager where he feels at ‘home’, Jose Mourinho insisted all players will be given a chance to excel in the first team including De Bruyne, and immediately called him back to feature for the Blues this season.

After impressing in pre-season, the winger was expected to star for the Blues in their bid to capture the title. The Belgium international started two of Chelsea’s first three Premier League matches but has made only 1 cameo substitute appearance in the league since then.

He was also not involved in the squad for last night’s crucial Champions League group stage game away to Steaua Bucharest, which the Blues emphatically won 4-0.

After not travelling with the rest of the squad to Romania, speculation was rife regarding De Bruyne’s future at the club, especially with the plethora of options available for Mourinho in midfield.

And according to Sky Sports, Werder Bremen are ready to offer an escape route for their star performer last season when the transfer window re-opens in January. Bremen’s general manager Thomas Eichin has revealed he is contact with the player’s representatives and he is aware of his current situation at the club.

He said, “Should Kevin be unhappy, we are an eager first contact. I am in contact with his agent and am informed about Kevin’s situation at Chelsea. I know Kevin, if he doesn’t play it is certainly a big problem for him. Let’s wait and see what happens in the winter. We will be ready, if there is a possibility, to get him.”
