Two Pros And Three Cons To Selling Callum Hudson Odoi Amid Reports Chelsea ‘Are Willing’ To Let Him Leave

Chelsea “are willing” to let Callum Hudson-Odoi leave, either on a permanent or temporary basis this summer, according to Eurosport.

Both Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel have struggled to get the best out of the player this season, and it seems an exit in the coming months is now a real possibility.

The Blues could let Hudson-Odoi go on loan, if a club can pay most of his £120,000 a week wages, but it is more realistic that a sale will take place instead, with Borussia Dortmund currently the front runners.

Press the next page as we assess the pros and cons to offloading the 20-year-old:

CON – He is still young

The fact that both Lampard and Tuchel have not been convinced by Hudson-Odoi suggest there is an underlying problem, maybe with his attitude or work rate.

However, players mature at different speeds, and it may simply be the case that something clicks in the winger’s head two or three years down the line. He is still very young so why not give him more time to find out if he has what it takes?

PRO – The money raised could be used to sign a striker

Despite Champions League qualification, Chelsea are not expected to spend £200m on new signings like they did last summer. Funds will need to be raised from somewhere, especially if they want a new striker.

Haaland is expected to cost at least £130m, Kane between £120m and £150m, while Lukaku may be available for £80m to £100m. The money the Blues could receive from Hudson-Odoi’s sale could be put towards a bid for one of these forwards.

CON – He hasn’t been given a chance in his best position

Under Tuchel in particular, Hudson Odoi has been deployed mostly as a wingback. Every fan will tell you that isn’t his most natural position.

In fact, the England international’s best performances have come on the left wing, cutting in off the flank onto his stronger right foot. If he was given some game time in that role, we could see better performances from him.

PRO – Hudson-Odoi is unlikely to fit into Tuchel’s system

The problem with the argument about his best position, though, is that Tuchel’s continuing use of the 3-4-3/3-5-2 formation means the manager simply has too many options to fill his positions up front.

Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz all appear to be ahead of Hudson-Odoi in the pecking order, so it may be best to sell him if he is simply not going to play.

CON – Chelsea’s poor track record when selling young players

We all know that selling young players can come back to bite Chelsea. You just have to look at Kevin De Bruyne and Lukaku, not to mention Mo Salah.

The Blues could really regret offloading Hudson-Odoi in a few years’ time if he does begin to mature into a top-class winger at another club.
