Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea Match Preview and Predictions

Tottenham Hotspur host Chelsea at their new home Wembley on Sunday afternoon. The game will mark the first-ever Premier League match played at Wembley, but Tottenham face having 20,000 empty seats due to safety concerns.

Chelsea began their Premier League campaign with a disappointing 3-2 loss at home to Burnley last weekend, having had both Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas sent off. Spurs on the other hand beat newcomers Newcastle United 2-0, a resounding result that will give them confidence to extend Chelsea’s misery.

Spurs went the entirety of last season’s campaign unbeaten at home, and have won 14 consecutive home league games; their joint-longest ever winning run at home in league competition. But with Wembley being donned as ‘home’ for this season, there is a general belief that the Lilywhites will struggle seeing as they have only won one of their last nine games at the ground. What’s more damning is that Chelsea have lost only two of their last 17 games against them.

Spurs’ golden-boy Harry Kane will be excited at the prospect of facing this shaky Chelsea defence, but there is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel for the Blues, as Kane has failed to score in any of his 11 Premier League appearances in the month of August. Although as London derbies go, Kane is prolific, scoring 18 goals in 21 Premier League London derbies.

There are no fresh injury concerns for either Antonio Conte or Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Forward Pedro could return to action following injury, and Tottenham’s Son could be expected to start. Pochettino played a 4-2-3-1 system against Newcastle last weekend, having finished last season playing 3-4-2-1. It is unclear whether he will stick with 4 at the back, but Chelsea will almost certainly try and outnumber Spurs in midfield by playing 3 at the back.

It is a massive game for both sides as Spurs will want to stake their claim as Premier League contenders, whereas Chelsea will be desperate to get their campaign up and running after their opening day blushes.

Predicted XI
