Torres Still Believes In Himself And His Chelsea Future

Fernando Torres has declared that he wants to stay at Chelsea for the remainder of his five-and-a-half year contract, rubbishing recent reports that the arrival of Jose Mourinho would see the Spaniard leave Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are currently undergoing a transition period or evolution of sorts, and with Mourinho’s second stint at the club, owner Roman Abramovich is keen on spending millions on new players to strengthen his team. A similar scenario was seen during Mourinho’s first stint, which followed the club’s most glorious time in history. Due to the failure of the past managers to replicate Mourinho’s success, Abramovich decided to rehire the Portuguese boss from Real Madrid.

However, Fernando Torres’ career at Chelsea has been rough to say the least. Arriving from Liverpool in a record £50 million transfer, the striker came with a reputation of a goal poacher, but nobody expected the unexpected. Torres’ form dipped quickly after it had been improving at Liverpool after the previous injury riddled season, and as a result Torres was unable to settle at the club. Some blame the heavy price tag for the dip in form, but most of the supporters remained patient in the face of his lack of form.

When Torres arrived in January, 2011, he played 14 games that season, and scored just one goal, showing that the pressure was taking its toll on the player. The 29-year old striker played 68 games in the following seasons, and there was no real return of form, with just 14 goals to show for his appearances in the Barclays Premier League.

Mourinho’s master plan for the following seasons is to win trophies- as many and as fast as possible, and media reports suggested strikers like Demba Ba and Torres would not find a spot in the squad. Further talk was fueled recently when the Napoli chairman declared initial talks with Chelsea officials over a possible transfer of striker Edinson Cavani.

Also, Bayer Leverkusen attacker, Andre Schurrle, has been constantly linked with a switch to Chelsea, and that deal seems to be on track according to recent media reports. These deals do not come as good news for Ba and Torres, as Chelsea will have to offload a few players to try to keep the squad more so than the books balanced.

According to Metro, despite both strikers possibly arriving at the club, Torres has spoken ahead of the new season, and is looking forward to working under Mourinho next season.

Torres said, “I’m looking forward to the chance of working with Jose.”

“It is the same every summer, there is talk and rumours every day.”

“When I signed for Chelsea I signed for five-and-a-half years and I want to be there for all of that.”
