Torres Set To Become Diego Costa’s Back-up For Next Season

There have been many rumors surrounding Torres’s departure, none of which have proven to be true so far. The Spaniard, who failed to become accustomed to Chelsea’s playing style since moving to London from Liverpool, is almost certain he will spend at least one more year playing for the Blues. According to the Daily Mail, now that Demba Ba and Lukaku have left, he will become Mourinho’s second or third choice depending on how well Drogba manages to perform. With Costa already scoring for his new team, it is hard to believe that Torres will have a chance to be part of Chelsea’s starting line-up.

The Spaniard was linked on several occasions to his former team, Atletico Madrid who were looking to replace Diego Costa and David Villa. Unfortunately for Torres who would have had a bigger chance to perform for the Spanish side than he does for Chelsea, Atletico directed their attention elsewhere and dropped any transfer talks. It would have been strange to see Torres leave for Madrid without being part of at least one of the two transfers which took place between The Blues and the La Liga winners. If something were to happen it would have happened by including the 30 year old striker in either the Costa or the Luis deal.

With Chelsea looking pretty satisfied with the way the squad looks, there is no chance for Torres to return to Spain. Despite his poor performances over the years, Mourinho has decided to keep the striker until he reaches his final year of contract.
