Torres Out, Gomez In At Chelsea?

Torres Out, Gomez In At Chelsea?

The Blues are strongly tipped to land at least one big name striker in the summer transfer window, as record £50 million signing Fernando Torres continues to be a flop, having scored just 14 Premier League goals in 74 appearances for the Champions League winners of last season.

Ever since Torres switched Merseyside for London, he has been a bit part player for the Blues and has failed to adapt to the Chelsea system. He showed signs of promise last season, but was never given a good run in the team with talismanic striker Didier Drogba preferred up front alone. And justifiably so, as his goal in the Champions League final against Bayern last season sent the tie to extra time and penalties where his crucial penalty in the shootout secured the Blues’ first ever Champions League trophy.

With Drogba having left in the summer, Torres was expected to fill his boots and was subsequently given a regular run in the team. But it has not worked out for El Nino at Chelsea and since he has lost that half yard of pace, he has not seemed capable of replicating the outstanding form he showed at Liverpool where he terrorized Premier League defenders.

It would come as no surprise if Torres is sold in the summer which would leave Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku, currently on loan at West Brom, as the two senior strikers at the Blues’ disposal. Chelsea have a stacked midfield with quality all around, but are lacking in the striking department. Many Blues fans feel that owner Roman Abramovich is in the market for at least one big name forward signing this summer.

Chelsea have been regularly linked with Falcao who is expected to cost a fortune and he is already being chased by Real Madrid and Barcelona. Abramovich has since focussed his attention on landing Bayern Munich hitman Mario Gomez, who amassed a huge 41 goals in 52 appearances for the German outfit last season.

Gomez has scored 8 goals in 17 appearances in this injury-prone season and has lost his place in the side to Croatian star, Mario Mandzukic. Bayern have already announced that Guardiola will be the new manager in the summer and he has reportedly set his sights on bringing either Luiz Suarez or Neymar to the Allianz Arena.

Gomez believes that Guardiola’s intention of buying a new striker means he has no future left at the club, and may be willing to switch as he attracts attention from top European clubs. Still considered one of the most lethal finishers in the business, Gomez would be an asset to any team and Chelsea are reportedly lining up a bid for his services.

However, Gomez won’t come cheap as the German club values him in excess of £35 million, but Abramovich is considering spending that amount as he believes Gomez will thrive and deliver at the Bridge. Much was thought of Torres and Shevchenko before their moves and we all know how those transfers turned out. Is Gomez the man to finally take the burden of scoring goals for the London club?
