Torres Happy To Help Eto’o In Any Way He Can Despite Competing For Selection

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was unable to land his number one transfer target this summer – Wayne Rooney – and instead opted to sign Samuel Eto’o from Anzhi Makhachkala on a free transfer. Mourinho won the Champions League with Eto’o during their time at Inter Milan and, according to Mourinho, his experience was needed at the club to drive them forward.

The Blues already have a wealth of experience on their books in the form of Fernando Torres, who has scored 80 Premier League goals since he first arrived in England at Liverpool ahead of the 2007-08 season.

However, the £50 million forward has been very inconsistent during his time at the Bridge and there were also reports linking the former Atletico Madrid captain with a return back to Spain. With a shortage of top quality strikers at their disposal, Torres has remained at the club.

The Spaniard is directly competing for a starting spot with Demba Ba and summer recruit Eto’o, who was preferred ahead of him in the starting line-up during the club’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Everton.

Even though the Cameroon international is the preferred striker for Mourinho, Torres has insisted that there really is not an issue between the pair. According to the Dailymail, the former Liverpool forward has revealed that his rivalry with Eto’o is not turning bitter but he is in fact trying to help the 32-year-old settle in order to help him fire for the club.

He said, “There is now more competition up front but Demba, Samuel and me are not enemies, we are friends. We are team-mates and are fighting for the same targets. I think it’s really good for the team.”

He added, “Eto’o is one of the best strikers I have ever seen. I played against him in Spain many times and you can see the record he had there with Real Mallorca and Barcelona, as well as in Inter. I am sure he is going to really enjoy this period of his career with Chelsea. He is training really well, I wish him all the best and will help him in every way that I can.”

However, Eto’o endured a forgettable debut for the Blues as the striker missed a host of gilt-edge chances that meant Chelsea left Goodison Part empty-handed. With Champions League starting this Wednesday for Chelsea, Torres and Ba could get a look-in to prove to the Special One that they still have the quality to produce at the top level.
