Torres’ Future On The Line

Fernando Torres has spoken to the media about Jose Mourinho’s arrival at the club, and said that he looked forward to meeting the former Real Madrid manager to know how he planned to use the striker, and how to prepare for the next Barclays Premier League campaign.

Ever since Mourinho’s arrival was confirmed by the London based club, the media have been throwing light on whether Torres would fit into the manager’s plans, or not. His dismal form for Chelsea over his stint has not helped the cause for the Spaniard, who is currently representing his country at the FIFA Confederations Cup at Brazil.

Arriving from Liverpool in a record £50 million transfer, the striker came with a reputation of a goal poacher, but that was not the case during his time at Stamford Bridge. Torres’ form dipped quickly, and was unable to settle at the club. Some blame the heavy price tag for the dip in form, but the supporters were hardly impressed by his lack of form.

When Torres arrived in January, 2011, he played 14 games that season, and scored just one goal, showing signs of weakness. The 29-year old striker played 68 games in the following seasons, and there was no return to form, with just 14 goals to show for his appearances in the Premier League.

A big concern for Chelsea will be Torres’ wages, which are extremely high compared to that of fellow strikers Demba Ba and Victor Moses. Due to the UEFA Financial Fair Plays rules on the horizon, either Torres’ wages will have to drop, or his goal tally for the club will have to increase significantly. The club have also recently completed the signing of Bayer Leverkusen attacker Andre Schurrle, which adds to the mystery about Torres’ future.

The ‘Special One’ himself termed Torres’ stint and form at Chelsea as ‘so-so’, which makes for an interesting meeting between the two, after the Confederations Cup.

According to Metro, Torres said, “I look forward to talking with Mourinho and to know what plans he has for me,”

“The first thing I am aware of is he will expect much more from me, I expect more from me. Now I have pressure Mourinho adds and that’s a challenge for a player.”

“I want to talk with Mourinho and then prepare for the coming season.”

The striker has also been linked with a move to Barcelona, and with pre-season matches fast approaching, any move should be confirmed within the next few weeks.
