Top Five Chelsea Goalkeepers In The Premier League Era Including Ex-Gunners Stopper

Mendy

Chelsea aren’t having their best season this year, as they sit 10th in the Premier League table – so why don’t we cast our minds back to better times?

Today, we’ll be looking at five of the best goalkeepers who’ve played for Chelsea during the Premier League era. There are a few familiar faces in here – as well as some surprise inclusions.

We’re only looking at goalkeepers based on their performances for Chelsea for this list.

For example, while Mark Schwarzer may have excelled outside of Stamford Bridge, his game time at the club was limited. Do you agree with our picks?

Ed de Goey

First on the list is Ed De Goey, who played for Chelsea from 1997-2003. He was the most expensive goalkeeper in the world when he signed for the Blues, costing them £2.25 million.

A steady ‘keeper with no outstanding weaknesses, De Goey kept 72 clean sheets in 179 games for Chelsea. He even set the record for clean sheets during a single season (27), but this has since been surpassed.

He was a mainstay at the club during his first three seasons, before gradually being phased out in favour of the next goalkeeper on our list.

Carlo Cuducini

Carlo Cudicini was a Chelsea player for nine years – he initially joined the club in 2000, remaining at Stamford Bridge until 2009, when he moved to Tottenham.

The Italian had a penchant for saving penalties – during his time at the club, he saved six of the 12 penalties he faced as he just had a knack for psyching out the opponent.

Cuducini was unfortunate to have never won a cap for Italy – he was always overlooked in favour of the legendary Gianluigi Buffon.

Edouard Mendy

Chelsea’s current first-choice goalkeeper only makes the number three spot on this list. While his talents certainly cannot be denied, his mistakes also cannot be ignored.

With that being said, Mendy is still one of the world’s leading goalkeepers at this point. He’s also made a splash internationally, as he won the most recent iteration of the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal.

He’s suffered with injuries and poor form this season – however, when he’s at his best, Mendy is a force to be reckoned with between the sticks.

Thibaut Courtois

Thibaut Courtois was perhaps slightly underappreciated during his time at Stamford Bridge or at least he seems to think he was. The Belgian was prone to the occasional hiccup, but they were few and far between.

Courtois has everything you’d want in a goalkeeper. Not only does he provide a commanding presence in the box, he also possesses cat-like reflexes – which is very impressive for a man of his size.

Currently, he plays for Real Madrid – Courtois has won two La Liga trophies and a Champions League with Los Blancos as well as two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one EFL Cup with Chelsea.

Petr Cech

Petr Cech isn’t just the best Chelsea ‘keeper of the Premier League era – he’s one of the best goalkeepers of all time.

During the Czech’s time at the Blues, he made no less than 333 appearances – winning four league titles, four FA Cups and a solitary Champions League.

Cech was the complete goalkeeper – he excelled in every single department. Outside of Chelsea, he also played for clubs such as Arsenal where he joined before ending his career plus Rennes and Sparta Prague.
