Top 5 Premier League Clubs With The Highest Net Spends

The financial behemoth that is the Premier League is growing stronger every year. £815 million was spent on players during the January window by clubs in the Premier League – with almost half of that coming from a single club. Can you guess who they are (no prizes for getting it right)?

‘Net spend’ refers to the amount of money spent by a club on players weighed up against the amount of money they have received from outgoing transfers.

As such, these five clubs haven’t necessarily spent the most money.

Newcastle United

Some may have expected Newcastle to be higher up this list, given their moneybags owners. Despite this, Newcastle have been careful when it comes to splashing the cash.

Rather than throwing the big bucks at established superstars, Newcastle have instead opted to sign less-known talents. For example, Bruno Guimaraes is now one of the best midfielders in the Premier League – but before he signed for Newcastle, he was hardly a household name.

The Magpies have an overall net spend of £169.8 million this season, with Anthony Gordon being their most notable recent signing.

West Ham United

West Ham have spent money on some fantastic players over the last ten years, including Dimitri Payet, Tomas Soucek and the newly acquired Danny Ings. They’re certainly not afraid to spend, although their position in the Premier League table doesn’t always reflect this.

In total, David Moyes’ team have a net spend of £173.9 million this season. They’ve made several big money signings this campaign, including Gianluca Scamacca, Nayef Aguerd and Lucas Paqueta.

Their outgoing have been limited, too. Only Issa Diop and Craig Dawson have left the club for a fee this year – neither of which were for large sums of money by today’s standards.

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest have become infamous for their frivolous spending over the past few months. They spent an enormous amount of money on swathes of players in the summer – however, they were somewhat more frugal in January.

In this season alone, Nottingham Forest have signed 30 players to the club. As such, they have a very high net spend, adding up to £190.6 million.

They’ve signed players such as Remo Freuler, Morgan Gibbs-White and Keylor Navas this campaign. If they stay up, will their extravagant spending continue?

Manchester United

Manchester United, in recent years, have become known for splashing the cash on world-renowned stars. Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba have all turned out for the Red Devils over the last decade.

As such, United have also accrued a very large overall net spend. Currently, it stands at £199.4 million.

This season, United have brought in players such as Marcel Sabitzer, Casemiro and Antony – the latter of which cost them an initial fee of £82 million.

Chelsea

Let’s be honest – we all saw this one coming. By now, Chelsea’s prolific spending in both the summer and in January is very well documented.

Chelsea have signed players such as Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Enzo Fernandez for astronomical fees this season. In total, their net spend amounts to £548.7 million – dwarfing the rest of the league.

Despite this, Chelsea’s spending has yet to pay off, as Graham Potter’s men sit in 10th position in the Premier League.
