Tiago Agrees To Continue Playing For Atletico

Tiago was one of Chelsea’s secondary targets for the summer. This is one of the main reasons why the player chose to continue with Atletico. Even though, as SkySports reported, the deal offered by Mourinho was better than what he is currently receiving from the Spanish side, Tiago turned down his former Manager in order to continue feeling important within the team. Currently the 33 year old is under contract until 2016 and will probably end his career in Madrid.

Chelsea wanted to sign him as a package deal with either of the two players they brought in from Atletico. Luis and Costa were too important to miss out though so Mourinho moved fast and could not wait for Tiago to decide what his future would be. Apparently, the Portuguese midfielder was supposed to sign with the Blues and take the substitute role for Matic or Mikel when they might not be on top of their game. Ramires was also targeted by Real which would have left an empty spot on the team.

Tiago made a good choice by staying in Madrid. If he did decide to come to London, his career would not have taken a great turn. It would have been next to impossible to make a few appearances during the 2014-2015 season, despite the large number of games Chelsea will be handling. Diego Simeone seems to have had more influence over Tiago as well, which is also a reason for his decision to continue playing for the Spanish Championship winners.
