Three CONS And Two PROS To Chelsea Selling Christian Pulisic In January

There has been a lot of speculation about the future of Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic in recent days.

Depending on what report you read, he could be available on loan or put up for sale during the January transfer window.

Pulisic is not said to be forcing a move away from London but it seems clear that the Blues won’t stand in his way if a satisfactory offer arrives in the New Year.

Press the next page as we look at the pros and cons of selling the American international.

CON – Pulisic’s Unlocked Potential

The American may now be 24 years of age but you do get the feeling that there is still room for him to improve and become the player we all thought he would become when he first arrived at Stamford Bridge

Pulisic has outstanding dribbling ability and, during his purple patch back in 2020, he was even compared to Eden Hazard. If he recaptures that form at another club and stays injury-free, Chelsea would regret offloading him.

PRO – He Isn’t A Key Player And Would Free Up Space For A Replacement

Even though many believe Pulisic is a talented player, he has never managed to hold down a starting spot, despite working under three different managers.

Pulisic’s record of 26 goals and 21 assists in 133 appearances is hardly a great return for a player who COST £58M. It may be time for the club to cut their losses and find a more consistent player to replace him.

CON – A January Exit For Pulisic Could Damage Chelsea’s Champions League Hopes

Finding a replacement in the January transfer window won’t be straightforward. The Blues do have money to spend but that doesn’t guarantee the club will be able to bring in a player who could make an impact.

If you let Pulisic leave, without bringing in someone who can, at least, match his ability, you would damage the club’s chances of finishing in the top four.

PRO – His Poor Injury Record Means He Won’t Be Missed

It needs to be highlighted that Pulisic has missed 354 days due to injury or illness since arriving at Stamford Bridge; that is almost an entire year.

Pulisic’s fitness is a major factor to consider when considering whether to offload him. If he is sold in January, the forward won’t be available during the run-in, but he may not have been fit anyway.

CON – Sending Pulisic To A Premier League Rival Would Be A Massive Risk

The majority of clubs that are reportedly interested in Pulisic are English teams. Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle have all been mentioned as potential suitors.

AC Milan and Juventus have also been credited with an interest but they are unlikely to be able to match the winger’s reported £35m asking price. If the only serious offers come from the Premier League and Chelsea decide to sell, the Blues could be strengthening one of their rivals.
