Thibaut Courtois Hoping For Extended Atletico Stay

Thibaut Courtois was purchased by Chelsea back in 2011 from Belgian club Genk. He was then immediately loaned out to Atletico Madrid where he had a memorable debut season. He established himself as the number one choice in goal and put in some solid performances between the sticks for Atletico. He capped off an impressive first season with silverware in the form of victory in the Europa League. As the curtains drew on his loan deal, he had mentioned his desire to stay put for a second season. Since Chelsea were all stocked up in the goalkeeping department, they let him stay put for a second consecutive loan deal.

He repeated his inspired performances in his second season, and was instrumental in Atletico’s successful year which was highlighted in the form of a third place league finish along with winning the Copa del Rey against Real Madrid. Now that his second year has come to a close, he was expected to return to his parent club Chelsea in the summer. However, according to Metro, the 21-year old has once again reiterated his desire to extend his loan arrangement for an unprecedented third straight season. He wants to spend yet another year in the Spanish capital before coming back to London permanently.

He made his desire known publicly on his official Twitter handle by saying, “Thank you very much to all atletic for this season! Your support in every game has been incredible,”

“I want to stay here one more year to continue sharing joy with you!”

With his desire of staying put out in the open, it now remains to be seen as to how will Chelsea react to this request, though it looks like they will have to go against his wishes and call him back since they are set to release back-up stoppers Ross Turnbull and Hilario over the summer, thus being very short at the back.

Where do you see Courtois playing next season?
