Thiago Silva Drops Major Hint About His Chelsea Future As He Mentions Contract Situation

Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva says he is hoping to play at least two more seasons of professional football before he retires.

The Brazilian legend has recently turned 38 but he wants to continue until his 40 as long as he can secure an extension to his current deal at Stamford Bridge:

“My aim is to play until I’m 40 years old but I don’t know if it will be this level or this competition. It depends on this season and we’ll see what will happen in the World Cup. It also depends on a contract extension but yeah, my aim is to play until I’m 40.”

Silva’s contract does expire at the end of the campaign but, despite his advancing years, he has shown no signs of slowing down. If he continues to play regularly, there is no reason why the club won’t keep him beyond the summer.

New manager Graham Potter will certainly have a say in the matter but it would be a shock if he dropped the defender. Silva’s game time will, however, need to be managed carefully and fans should not be surprised if he doesn’t start versus Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Although Brazil’s last game of the international break is on Tuesday, the late kickoff and the long-haul flight back means he will only have a limited time to recover ahead of the trip to Selhurst Park.
