The TOP FIVE Most Expensive Squads In The Premier League

Despite the financial impact of the global health crisis, every club in the top flight of English football has continued to invest in signing new players.

The lucrative TV rights deal means Premier League sides do have a safety net, and it allows them to continually look at ways to improve their teams.

We have decided to look at the top clubs who have invested the most money into signing players, and it is not surprising to see who makes the top five.

Press the next page as we countdown the most expensively assembled squads in the Premier League.

5) Arsenal – £522.3m

The Gunners were the biggest spenders in the transfer market this summer as the club tries to get back to fighting at the top of the table.

Without European football, though, they are having to pay top dollar to bring in players. It remains to be seen whether shelling out £50m on talents such as Ben White will pay off in the long run.

4) Liverpool – £532.5m

The Reds’ have always been perceived as being rather conservative in the transfer market, spending what they bring in through sales, but they have broken their transfer record a number of times over the past five years.

Naby Keita (£52.5m) Alisson Becker (£67m) and Virgil van Dijk (£75m) were all brought in for large sums and helped them to challenge for trophies under manager Jurgen Klopp.

3) Chelsea – £654.0m

For all of Roman Abramovich’s lavish spending in the early years, the Blues are now extremely well run under the stewardship of director Marina Granovskaia.

Chelsea do still shell out big sums on star names, as we have seen with Romelu Lukaku just this summer, but they have raised a lot of money through player sales in recent seasons too.

2) Manchester United – £778.7m

It’s fair to say that United’s scattergun approach to player recruitment since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson has led them to waste a lot of money in the transfer market.

However, over the last couple of years since the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the restructuring of the scouting department, they have begun to invest more wisely. The arrival of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo for under £140m this summer is a case in point.

1) Manchester City – £829.5m

The Citizens have consistently been the highest spenders since the club’s takeover by Sheikh Mansour and they continue to lead the way with the British record transfer of Jack Grealish.

While Pep Guardiola’s management has to be credited for City’s dominance of English football in recent years, he would have struggled without the sizeable investment in the first-team squad.
