After a very strong start to the season, Chelsea striker Timo Werner has now gone eight games without scoring in all competitions.
The German international has started 18 of the Blues’ 21 matches so far this campaign, while he has often been played out of position on the left-wing by manager Frank Lampard.
It has led to some supporters on Twitter calling for Werner to be rested for the game against West Ham on Monday night, while others feel he simply needs to be used as a centre-forward:
The guy needs a rest

Play him as a no. 9

Just play him up top or not at all

Ideally it would be TW in the middle with CP on the left. CP’s injury issues mean this just isn’t happening as much as it should.

He is fine on the wing if the other team has a high line but if they have a low block it neutralises everything he can bring to the game from a wide position when that happens he needs to move central either as main striker or just behind as a second forward

Don’t drop him, play him as a central forward!

He needs to be playing as a no. 9, simple.

Ever since he got back from International duty after Germany were trashed by Spain, he’s been something else..
I don’t know if that match had any thing to do with his confidence.

To be honest, it doesn’t seem like fatigue is a factor as the German is well used to playing every few days. He started 41 of RB Leipzig’s 45 matches last season.
Werner’s position is probably more of a factor. The 24-year-old played ostensibly as a central striker in Germany and Lampard may be wise to switch him back to his more natural position in order for the goals to flow again.
