The gambles of the transfer period – Will Chelsea come out on top?

The summer transfer period is well underway and European clubs, big and small, are chasing after their dream targets as well as looking to profit on selling their surplus players. Like most years, Chelsea is well involved in the market, with names like Lukaku and Bonucci linked to the club, while Captain John Terry departs from the Stamford Bridge.

We take a look at some of the most prominent names liked to Chelsea arrival, the latest sales for the club and a general outlook for Chelsea in this transfer period.

Nemanja Matic to Manchester United?

Jose Mourinho holds a strong sway over many Chelsea players and now that he is at the helm of the Red Devils, he will be looking to bring some of his former protégés to Manchester. At the top of that list is Nemanja Matic, whose transfer seems to be close to complete at this point.

Currently, a price of £35 million is being thrown around for the Serbian midfielder and the main desicive factor is whether or not Blues will be able to secure the signing of Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco. Judging by the reports, the player has already agreed personal terms with United that would see him earn £150.000 per week.

During the few coming days, we could see Matic and Mourinho reunited, but much of it will depend on whether the replacement from Monaco will arrive. The results of that negotiation should be known within the week.

Alex Sandro and Tiemoue Bakayoko to Chelsea?

It is not every day that a deal worth over £50 million is struck for a defender, but Alex Sandro seems to be worth it for the Blues. Chelsea have made an offer for the Juventus left back that would see him become the most valuable defensive player in the history of the game.

At the same time, while the negotiations for Sandro are going on, Bekayoko is set to arrive to London for the finalization of his deal while Virgil Van Dijk of Southampton is the final target that would complete the amazing new defensive lineup for Chelsea.

If successful, Conte’s plan would truly make Chelsea stronger than ever, but it would all come at a huge cost financially. Of course, the completion of this entire plan as a whole remains questionable and it will be interesting to see whether Conte can complete all three signings before the transfer period is over, as well as how valuable the investment would actually be for the club.

Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea?

With Diego Costa on the verge of leaving the club and Alvaro Morata preferring to move to Manchester United from Real, it seems that Romelu Lukaku of Everton is Chelsea’s best attacking option at the moment.

The deal for Lukaku to arrive seems likely to reach up to £80 Million in value, but is still being held up for several reasons. For starters, Everton are believed to be looking to squeeze a bit more money from the Blues, whose offer currently stands closer to £70 Million. Furthermore, Chelsea are changing their sports gear from Adidas to NIKE in just a few days, and it is likely that all new transfers will wait to make their unveiling in NIKE gear.

In either case, the move of Romelu Lukaku to the Premier League champions seems imminent and it was long overdue as the striker has had another impressive season and is simply too good to remain at Everton.

Captain John Terry to Aston Villa

If there is one player who has made a huge impact on Chelsea, it is certainly John Terry. After many years in the role of the captain of the London club, Terry is now 36 years old and his time to move on has come, with younger players taking his place in London.

While Terry could maybe continue playing at top level, at this age there is little reason for him to force himself so much and it seems that Championship side Aston Villa are prime candidates to take Terry in and let him still compete at a high level, while at a slightly slower pace than he was used to in Premier League.

Terry’s Chelsea contract is almost up, and we are likely to be watching him play in Championship the next season.

The Transfer Gambles Continue

The transfer period presents a great gamble for all top level teams. The reinforcements being brought are never certain to succeed at their new clubs, while sale of players can also lead to a disintegration of what used to work. Whether Chelsea will benefit from this year’s transfers remains to be seen, but with so many big names in the cards, it is likely that the Blues will only come out stronger than ever.
