The Five Centre Backs That Chelsea Could Sign During The Summer Transfer Window

Following confirmation that Todd Boehly’s consortium have become owners of Chelsea football club, the Blues can now get on with making new signings.

The departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers mean that manager Thomas Tuchel’s top priority will be to bring in at least two new centre-halves over the course of the summer.

Unsurprisingly, a fair number have already been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge and we have decided to go through some of the likeliest candidates in this article.

Press the next page as we list the five centre-backs that Chelsea may pursue when the transfer window opens.

Jules Kounde

With the takeover now completed, it seems like a move for the France international is very likely to be the Blues’ first piece of transfer business under the new owners.

Kounde reportedly has a verbal agreement to sign for Chelsea, and it does appear that the only stumbling block will be agreeing a price with Sevilla. A fee in excess of £50m is expected to be enough to secure the player’s signature.

Presnel Kimpembe

Kounde’s international teammate is also thought to be a target for Tuchel, who is reportedly a big fan of the centre-back after having worked with him at Paris Saint-Germain.

Kimpembe is left-footed, meaning he would likely come in as Rudiger’s replacement on the left-hand side of the back three. With the Frenchman having issues over renewing his contract too, he could well be available this summer.

Josko Gvardiol

Reports in Germany suggest that the Blues have been keeping a close eye on the young Croatian defender’s development at RB Leipzig, with there being a possibility that a bid will be lodged for the player in the coming months.

Gvardiol is left-footed like Kimpembe so it is more than likely that only one of the two will be signed. At 20 years of age, the Leipzig player is pretty inexperienced and he may need some time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League.

Jose Gimenez

The Uruguayan has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge on and off over the last few years, so it does seem like there is someone in Chelsea’s recruitment department desperate to bring him in.

With Kounde being the priority target, you would think that Gimenez may only be considered if Cesar Azpilicueta opts to leave the London club. The Spaniard is reportedly looking to move back to Spain so a replacement may well be needed.

Kalidou Koulibaly

The Italian press have once again been linking Chelsea with a bid for the Senegalese colossus. The defender will turn 31 in June but he could be available for a reasonable price with just one year remaining on his contract.

Koulibaly is known for his physicality and you would expect him to adjust to life in English football pretty quickly if the Blues do decide to snap him up.
