The Blues Fall 5 Points Behind Arsenal

Even though Mourinho decided to rest most of his important players during the Capital One Cup match against Arsenal, his strategy did not fully pay off. His win against the Gunners was not doubled by a positive result against Newcastle who managed a 2-0 victory against the London team.

The match started pretty well balanced. Gouffran had the first chance to open the scoring but he was blocked. Chelsea responded with a well-executed corner kick which turned into a great scoring opportunity. Terry hit the post after Mata’s assist found him alone in the middle of the box.

The Blues were really unlucky last night considering how well they played during the first half. Hazard, Oscar and Lampard gave fans the impression that it was just a matter of time until they scored. Nothing really noticeable happened until the referee whistled for the end of the first half. Terry had another chance but was blocked. Torres looked nothing like he did during the past three matches which showed in front of goal. Newcastle missed one or two shots as well but did not cause any major problems.

The second half started with Chelsea attacking from all sides. Newcastle responded through Remy and Cabaye who looked determined to score. Mourinho decided to make some changes and sent Willian and Eto’o to replace Mata and Torres who looked tired.

Remy and Yoan Gouffran worked really well together. They managed to get past Chelsea’s defense a few times but failed to score. The first goal finally came during the 68th minute. The Blues’ defense was caught off-guard by Cabaye’s cross which ended up on Gouffran’s forehead. Newcastle’s player scored after being left alone inside Chelsea’s box.

Mourinho tried to go all out offense by sending in Schurrle to replace Lampard. The German international did not manage much in the 20 minutes given to him by Chelsea’s manager. The game picked up after the goal with both teams looking to score. A late counter-attack closed the deal for Newcastle who managed to score. Remy’s left footed shot found the back of the net with 2 minutes left on the clock. The game ended with what most believe to be an unfair result.
