Terry Can Earn His Chelsea Future – Mourinho

Englishman John Terry was regularly drafted in and out of the team last season under interim manager Rafael Benitez, which led to speculation that the defender’s days at Chelsea could possibly be numbered as he lost his place to young blood.

However, his fortunes have changed since the return of Mourinho to Chelsea, who has opted to bring him back to the regular first team setup straight away. The two forged a strong partnership during Mourinho’s first term as Chelsea boss, and they have now rekindled that bond this season.

It has also reaped dividends for the club on the whole and for Terry himself who has been in good form defensively. He was also on target on Saturday as his header managed to bring his team on level terms against Tottenham in the London derby.

The Portugese coach spoke to the press after the 1-1 game and was asked about what the future holds for the 32-year old defender, to which Mourinho optimistically replied that a new contract offer could be on its way very soon, provided Terry manages to maintain this form for the team.

Metro report him as saying, “I think he always has a future the way he is playing – he has a future in here (at Chelsea), in China, or wherever he wants to have a future,”

“I have always told him from day one – don’t speak [publicly] about signing a new contract, just speak about working very hard from a physical point of view so you don’t have the same kind of problems you have had in the past two years and then you play regularly.”

“He is a very good player and very good players have no problems with their contracts.”

Mourinho sounds pretty confident and has given his word of offering Terry with a new deal for his efforts. Will he manage to sustain his place in the first team ahead of the likes of Gary Cahill? If yes, then do you see an extension in the offing in the near future for the Chelsea captain?
