SUCCESS Or FAILURE: We Predict How Chelsea’s New Signings Will Fare This Season

Chelsea spent a staggering £270m on new players over the summer and today, we have decided to go through each signing to assess how they will perform for the Blues this campaign.

Various factors can decide whether a new addition is a success or failure. A player may have to adapt to a new system or even a new country, while having the manager’s backing is key.

With Chelsea having only changed head coach very recently, the dynamic with these new signings is very interesting, considering Graham Potter did not have a say on bringing any of them in.

We have decided to stop short of making definitive judgements on Chelsea signings but we will predict how they will fare. Press the next page to find out more.

Wesley Fofana

It was interesting to see Potter benching the 21-year-old for his first game in charge against Red Bull Salzburg. His price tag means the manager will be under pressure to start him but he may feel the player still has a lot to learn.

Prediction – May struggle to hold down a place initially but should establish himself ahead of the ageing Cesar Azpilicueta.

Marc Cucurella

The Blues have a very adaptable defender in the Spanish international and, while they may have overpaid to bring him in, Potter knows the player well and will get the best out of him.

Prediction – Cucurella will be a regular starter, but will be rotated between wingback and left centre-back.

Raheem Sterling

Probably the only signing who has been an unqualified success so far, but it will be interesting to see how he copes if Potter continues to select him as a wingback.

Prediction – Could end up as Chelsea’s top scorer, considering the lack of competition from other quarters.

Kalidou Koulibaly

The Senegalese international has struggled with the pace of the Premier League so far and may need some time to bed in. Koulibaly is an excellent defender and Potter has used similar defenders (like Lewis Dunk) to great effect during his time at Brighton.

Prediction – Will continue to struggle in the coming weeks before adapting in the second half of the season.

Carney Chukwuemeka

After being effectively blanked by Tuchel, the £20m summer arrival from Aston Villa will be optimistic about featuring more under the stewardship of Potter, who has shown he’s prepared to develop young players.

Prediction – Minutes off the bench in the league with starts in both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

It’s hard to know what’s going through the 33-year-old’s head at the moment. Tuchel was the reason why he made the switch to Stamford Bridge and he may not feature as prominently under Potter.

Prediction – Could see his game time reduced as the season wears on and may leave next summer.

Denis Zakaria

Things haven’t started promisingly for the Juventus loanee. He was an unused substitute in Tuchel’s last game in charge and he didn’t get any minutes in Graham Potter’s first match either.

Prediction – Returns to Juve without making an impact
