Staying Or Leaving? 7 Chelsea Players Whose Contracts Expire Within The Next 15 Months

There has been a lot of talk surrounding the contracts of Chelsea players in recent weeks. Both Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger, in particular, have been the subject of a number of news stories.

Having looked at the expiry dates of others in the Blues’ squad, it seems there could well be an exodus of first-team players in the next 15 months, unless extensions are handed out.

There are seven Chelsea stars whose contracts expire either at the end of this season or in 2022 so we have decided to look at who could be leaving or staying.

Press the next page as we decide the futures of several key Chelsea players.

Thiago Silva

The Brazilian is expected to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge for another year, despite his recent absence from the team due to injury.

Silva has a great relationship with Thomas Tuchel, after spending two seasons with him at PSG before this campaign, so we put good money on him staying.

Olivier Giroud

The Frenchman has been in and out of Tuchel’s first-team plans and much may depend on whether he plays more minutes between now and the summer.

Giroud looked destined to leave Chelsea last year before a late-season return to the side saw the club extend his stay for another campaign. With the ball very much in the striker’s court this time, though, he could well be leaving.

Willy Caballero

With Edouard Mendy being signed as the new number one, Caballero has only featured in two first-team games for the Blues this campaign.

Tuchel has only selected the Argentinian veteran on the bench on three occasions since his appointment in January, and with Kepa taking his game time in cup matches, it seems inevitable that Caballero will be leaving this summer.

Emerson Palmieri

Tuchel has been delighted with the Italian’s attitude, and the left-back has responded in kind by praising the “sensational job” the manager has done since his arrival in January.

However, his goal against Atletico Madrid withstanding, Emerson has barely been able to make an impact, featuring in just three matches under Tuchel. If a good offer from an Italian side arrives in the summer, he will be leaving.

Andreas Christensen

It is a surprise that Chelsea have allowed his contract to run down. As things stand, the Danish international can leave on a free transfer at the end of next season, but after some superb displays, the club will be keen to sign him up to a new deal.

Christensen featured rarely during the first half of the season, leading the defender to question his future at Stamford Bridge, but his regular starts in recent weeks should reassure him he has a future at the club. We see the centre-half staying.

Antonio Rudiger

Tuchel’s arrival has dramatically changed the defender’s fortunes. The German recently revealed he held talks with Tottenham about moving across London at the start of the season but, with the player now back in the first team, he is likely to stay for the long term.

No talks have been held so far about renewing Rudiger’s current deal but they are expected to happen at the end of the season. Currently, it looks very much like he is staying.

Cesar Azpilicueta

This is an interesting one. The club captain will be closing in on 33 when his contract expires in the summer of 2022 so it remains to be seen what sort of deal he would be offered by the club.

Considering his service to Chelsea, though, you would expect the club to hand Azpilicueta a one-year extension, at the very least. We think he will be staying.
