Starlet Reveals He Was Worried His Chance At Chelsea Would Never Come

Chelsea right-back Reece James put in a stunning debut performance against Grimsby on Wednesday night, with a goal and assist to his name.  Speaking after the 7-1 win, the 19-year-old revealed he was uncertain whether he’d get his chance to play for the Blues, following their success last season.

The defender even anticipated that he would be sent out on another loan spell, but when he discovered that he would be staying put this summer, he was happy to get his opportunity:

“At the time I wasn’t sure because the team did well last season, winning the Europa League. I decided to take it as it comes really and when I found out I was staying I was obviously happy. I’m glad I’m getting my chance.”

It hasn’t been a straight road to making his first appearance for the senior side. He sustained an ankle injury for England’s Under 20s in the summer which meant he missed the start of the season.

However, after making his competitive debut for the club, many now anticipate that James will be vying for a place in the first team with Cesar Azpilicueta over the coming months. The fullback is keeping his feet firmly on the ground, though, and isn’t expecting to feature regularly:

“I’m not sure what’s going to happen in the weeks ahead. I have to take it as it comes. If I’m involved then I’ll be happy, and if I’m not I’ll play again.”
