Southgate Provides New Update On Chelsea Man’s Fitness Following Absence Against Belgium

England manager Gareth Southgate says Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell’s fitness will be assessed ahead of the Three Lions’ Nations League match against Denmark.

The 23-year-old has been absent for the games against Wales and Belgium due to a virus, which is said to be unrelated to COVID-19. Southgate says the player has now taken part in training after returning to the team hotel but after having spent a week on the sidelines, they need to see whether he is fit enough to feature on Wednesday:

“Ben reported to the hotel today. He did a training session on his own. We’ve just got to assess where he’s at because he hasn’t been able to train through the week. So, there’s a little bit of assessment needed over the next couple of days but he is with the group now.”

By the sound of things, it does seem as though Chilwell should be ready to play against Southampton on Saturday. With the player having returned to training at the weekend, he should have a full week’s preparation if Southgate opts against using him versus Denmark.

The £50m summer signing arrived at Stamford Bridge injured but he made a huge impact on his league debut, scoring one and providing an assist in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.
