Should This English Chelsea Wonderkid, Signed In January, Be Given A Chance By Graham Potter?

Chelsea signed a plethora of exciting talents in January – bringing players such as Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez and Benoit Badiashile to the club. One of them, however, has somewhat flown under the radar – Noni Madueke.

It’s a crying shame – Madueke is an extremely fun player to watch, possessing excellent dribbling ability and a cavernous bag of tricks. At just 21 years of age, he also has plenty of room to grow and develop.

With quick feet, fearless running and underrated physicality on the ball, Madueke draws comparisons to a young Raheem Sterling, when he began his career at Liverpool. He has also been compared to a young Cristiano Ronaldo, during his time at Manchester United.

Primarily a right winger, Madueke can also function as a striker – regardless, he is at his best when cutting inside and running at players inside the half-spaces.

Sadly, Chelsea have a surplus of players who can play in Madueke’s primary position – including talents such as Sterling, Mudryk, Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic. As such, when given a chance, Madueke will need to grab the opportunity with both hands if he wants to stand out from the rest of the pack.

Madueke began his youth career at Crystal Palace, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur’s academy at the age of 12. In 2018, he made the jump to PSV – he would go on to make 51 appearances and score eleven goals for the Dutch giants.

Since joining Chelsea in January, he has made just four appearances for the club and has yet to score a goal or register an assist. However, this is owed largely in part to the surplus of wingers currently at Chelsea, which has severely limited Madueke’s game time.

We certainly haven’t seen the Barnet-born boy at his best in a Chelsea shirt yet. He was an absolute superstar at PSV – but he will need to replicate his Eredivisie performances if he is going to win over the Stamford Bridge massive. Nevertheless, if he is given a consistent run of games, expect fireworks from this young man.
