Should Chelsea Recall Romeu Next Season?

The 22-year-old, Oriol Romeu is a product of the Barcelona youth academy but left the Catalans to join Chelsea in the summer of 2011 on a four-year deal. However, he has so far failed to establish himself as an important member of the squad and Jose Mourinho decided to send him out on loan to Valencia for the current campaign.

The Blues have a host of players out on loan but Romeu is one that Mourinho and his staff are tracking closely. The defensive midfielder put in an impressive shift in Valencia’s shock 3-2 win over Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Saturday, which raised many eyebrows over his future with the club.

According to the Standard, Chelsea have been monitoring the Spaniard’s progress in La Liga and do not want to sell him as they view him as an important member of their squad next season. However, Romeu is unsure of his future and will decide where he will play his football only at the end of the season.

He said, “I have no idea [what will happen in the summer]. I need to decide at the end of the season. Many things can happen. We will sit down and decide what is best for me to do. They are watching me and they are always telling me things. They are looking after me and that’s good. You never know what can happen, but they are looking after me.”

Romeu is yet another option Mourinho has to choose from in what is becoming an embarrassment of riches for the Portuguese manager to choose his squad and team from in the coming seasons.
