Shearer Slams Chelsea Summer Signing Who “Didn’t Offer Anything” Against Arsenal

BBC pundit Alan Shearer singled out Chelsea forward Timo Werner for criticism after the German international was hauled off at half time against Arsenal yesterday evening.

The Blues were struggling to cause the Gunners problems in the final third of the pitch and Shearer says Werner’s first-half display summed up a poor performance from the team’s attacking players:

“When you look at some of the players on show in the attacking third, then this could be a worry for Frank. [Timo] Werner, who was dragged at half time, didn’t offer anything in that first half, got into one or two decent positions. Arsenal had men behind the ball and they made it very difficult for them, Arsenal. Arsenal were solid and offered Chelsea nothing.”

Werner started well after his £47.5m move from RB Leipzig last summer, bagging seven goals in his first nine appearances for Chelsea, but the 24-year-old now hasn’t scored since early November despite being a regular starter.

Along with Shearer, manager Frank Lampard was also critical of Werner’s performance, and it’s clear that the striker is suffering from a crisis of confidence currently.

There is also the fact that the German has played pretty much every game this season, so a rest may do him a world of good, refreshing him both mentally and physically.

Lampard has already confirmed Callum Hudson-Odoi will start against Aston Villa tomorrow night and Werner is the likeliest to make way.
