Shearer Calls On Sarri To Make Key Change To Stop Teams Exploiting Chelsea’s Glaring Weakness

TV pundit Alan Shearer believes Manchester City were the latest team to exploit Chelsea’s major weakness in the middle of the park.

During the 6-0 defeat yesterday, the former Newcastle striker noticed City focused on closing down Jorginho:

“We saw when Chelsea were beaten at Arsenal, beaten at Bournemouth conceding four goals, that if you stop Jorginho in the middle of the park then you’ve got a very good chance of stopping Chelsea.”

“I thought City did that brilliantly. They set traps all over the park just to say ‘OK, if you want, give it to him we’re there and we’re going to put him under pressure…you pass it to him if you want and, if you do, we’ve got the trap ready and we’ll capitalise’.”

“They stopped him all game and Chelsea could not get started. If that’s not working then they need to find another way to play.”

It’s an issue that has cropped up time and time again in recent weeks, with another pundit Jamie Carragher also highlighting the problem.

Manager Maurizio Sarri seems wedded to his formation, with just one pivot ahead of a back four instead of two.

If Jorginho continues to be closed down by opponents, there’s no doubt that the system will need to be changed or adjusted.

Most would like to see N’Golo Kante moved deeper alongside Jorginho to help out the Italian, especially against high calibre opponents like yesterday.

Whether Sarri will make the change against Manchester United this weekend, or in the Carabao Cup final against City, we shall have to wait and see.
