Schwarzer More Than Content To Be Back Up At Chelsea

Schwarzer More Than Content To Be Back Up At Chelsea

Chelsea announced the capture of the 40-year old Schwarzer on Thursday after they dropped their interest in Norwich City’s John Ruddy after seeing two bids rejected by Norwich. They then turned their attention towards former Fulham and Middlesbrough keeper Mark Schwarzer and swiftly moved to secure the transfer for free as the Australian international became a free agent a month ago.

Chelsea were down to the bare minimum in terms of goalkeeping personnel as they had only Petr Cech within their ranks following the double departures of Hilario and Ross Turnbull. Schwarzer’s arrival now seems to have solved their problems in goal with Thibault Courtois in loan at Atletico Madrid.

The shot stopper spoke post of his move from Fulham and revealed that he signed for Chelsea despite being fully aware of the fact that there might be situations in which he will not get game time for weeks at a time. He, though, did not want to pass up the opportunity to be involved at a club as big as Chelsea so late in his career.

He spoke to the local press following his move and was reported by London Evening Standard as saying, “Petr is number one – that goes without saying.”

“For me what was important was that I could come to a club the size of Chelsea and really try and push myself as much as possible.”

“If I can help Petr Cech improve as a goalkeeper and help myself improve as a goalkeeper then we can learn a lot from each other and I’d be delighted with that.”

“There’s a lot of games throughout the season and I know that if I’m pushing as hard as I can do then there’ll be opportunities along the way.”

Schwarzer will be hoping that he gets a chance at Chelsea once in a while and that he will make the most of it, as he sets one eye on next summer’s World Cup. He will be keen to play in perhaps his last World Cup with Australia, and will want to prove himself at club level to be involved in his country’s quest for the big one next year.

When you think about it how could Schwarzer not be totally happy to be the back-up goalie at Chelsea when he is in the twilight of his career and he has a really good chance to win the Champions League, The EPL, The FA Cup and all the other trophies Chelsea enter which is a dream come true for amy footballer – the chance to genuinely win trophies.
