Schurrle Missed Semi-final: Exit Looms

Andre Schurrle has moved closer to a move from Chelsea to Wolfsburg after the German side’s officials traveled to London to discuss personal terms and details of the contract for the striker who has been short of first team football at the club, according to the Telegraph.

The Blues faced Liverpool in the reverse leg of the semi final at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, and the club bounced back after a rough week for the full squad. In the the first leg at Anfield, Chelsea were fortunate not to concede a 2nd goal as Liverpool attacked relentlessly and were trying to head to Stamford Bridge a goal up. Even though Liverpool were very motivated to get a result as the Capital One Cup could be the last opportunity for the club to win a trophy for their legendary midfielder Steven Gerrard, Chelsea won the game 1-0 thanks to Branislav Ivanovic’s extra time winner. There was no place for Schurrle in the squad for the game which suggests he was being kept out to avoid injury.

Schurrle began his career with Mainz in native Germany as a youth player in 2006 and three years later signed a professional contract with the senior side. After 66 appearances and 20 goals for the club, the 24-year old was signed by Bayer Leverkusen. Schurrle can also operate as an attacking winger, and he discovered this skill at Leverkusen. Then came the move to Chelsea, but the player has not had many first team starts, prompting a reported move which may well happen to finance the purchase of Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado.
