Sarri insists star has a future at the club

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has insisted that centre-back David Luiz still has a future at the club, after making his first Premier League appearance since February in the new manager’s first game of the season.

The Blues defeated Huddersfield Town 3-0 on Saturday, ensuring Sarri got off to a winning start in his debut season.

It was a fine performance all round from Chelsea, and Luiz in particularly looked very solid at the back.

The Brazilian was often dropped by former manager Antonio Conte, and spent much of the second half of the season out of the starting XI.

However, Sarri has backed the 31-year-old to still have “a big future” at Stamford Bridge, telling the Mirror that the defender can play in a back three or four.

“I don’t know about what happened in the past but now he has a good chance. We only have to carry on like we are doing now with him,” said Sarri on Luiz.

“I disagree that he can only play as one of three central defenders. If you are a good defender, you can play in a line of three or in a four.

“David has a big future here. He will be useful for us but not just on the pitch. He is also very important in the dressing room. I very much enjoy his attitude when I am working with him.”

Luiz’s Chelsea career looked almost certain to be over after the season he had last term, resulting in him missing out on a place at the World Cup with Brazil. But Sarri seems to have a lot of faith in the player, let’s hope we get to see the best of him once again.
