Romano Reveals 22 Cap International Is “Appreciated By Chelsea” But Attempt To Sign Him Has Hit The Rocks

AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is on Chelsea’s radar but the 22-year-old is now likely to sign a new contract with his current club, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The journalist claims that despite the Blues being allowed to talk with the 22-cap Italian international, with his current deal expiring in the summer, no discussions have taken place, and he is expected to sign an extension with the Rossoneri:

“Gianluigi Donnarumma is appreciated by Chelsea, but they are not talking at the moment to sign him. He’s currently negotiating his renewal with Milan, it’s possible a release clause is added in his contract.”

It is not a completely surprising development. Chelsea only snapped up a new number one, Edouard Mendy, back in September and the Senegalese international has done very little wrong since arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Donnarumma would certainly be a smart investment, due to his age and the fact he is available on a free transfer, but it does appear that the shot-stopper has his heart set on remaining with Milan anyway.

Romano’s suggestion that a release clause could be included in his new contract, though, may suggest that the Italian would be open to leaving the San Siro in the future.
