Rio Ferdinand Names The Two Key Areas Chelsea Must Strengthen In The Transfer Market This Summer

Former England international Rio Ferdinand believes Chelsea manager Frank Lampard will be actively looking to sign a new goalkeeper and centre-back before the start of next season.

The Blues conceded four goals against Bayern Munich last night and, while Ferdinand says the signings of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner were needed, he feels that the focus of the club’s transfer business should now switch to the backline:

“I think now he has to look at the other end of the pitch because that’s an area that when you want to win things, big trophies, which Frank will be wanting to do. That’s the demands of that club, the foundations in the centre-half area, goalkeeper have to be strong.”

It doesn’t look as though either position is Chelsea’s main priority at the moment. The focus appears to be getting a deal over the line for Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz.

With that transfer expected to cost in the region of £70m to £90m, it remains to be seen how much money will be left in the transfer kitty to reinforce the defence.

Lampard is also said to be keen on snapping up left-back Ben Chilwell from Leicester, and if that transfer is also agreed, it means that any further additions would probably have to be funded through player sales.
