REPORT: Chelsea Make Surprise Enquiry For Paraguayan International Defender

Chelsea have made an enquiry for Palmeiras centre-back Gustavo Gomez, according to Versus. The Paraguayan website claim that both sources in Brazil and those close to the player have told them that the Blues had been asking about the 28-year-old.

Gomez has been with Palmeiras for the best part of three years, having initially joined the Brazilian Serie A side on a two-year loan deal from AC Milan before signing on a permanent basis last summer.

The Paraguayan international defender has been in good form, having helped Palmeiras win the Copa Libertadores (South America’s equivalent of the Champions League) back in January.

Even so, Gomez is hardly a well-known name in Europe, and it may be the case that manager Thomas Tuchel wants to strengthen his options at centre-half, without breaking the bank, so Chelsea can then invest most of their transfer budget in the likes of Erling Haaland and Achraf Hakimi.
