Ben Chilwell’s first season at Chelsea has been a bit up and down, to say the least, but there were some good signs against Crystal Palace on Saturday that he is adapting to the left wingback role.
Manager Thomas Tuchel has had to rely on Marcos Alonso at times due to the fact that the Spaniard is more reliable in the final third of the pitch but Chilwell appears to be getting a handle on the attacking side of his game.
There is certainly still room for improvement but supporters on Twitter feel that Chilwell deserves to be singled out for showing some progress in recent games:
Chilwell as really stepped his game up

Never doubted him. Prefer him over Alonso

He just needed to understand the role.
Initially, he was still playing it as a LB.
Now, he’s fully into the flow..

Chilwell still needs to work on finishing tho.

Always hoped that Alonso was just a stop gap. A good one, admittedly, but still. Chilwell was ideally the future, be it LWB or LB.

It certainly wasn’t the perfect performance at Selhurst Park. The England international was beaten in the air for Christian Benteke’s goal in the second half, and there were a couple of chances he should have scored from, but it is good to see him now getting into the right positions when in possession.
