Real Madrid eyeing late swoop for Chelsea defender

Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui wants to sign Chelsea full-back Marcos Alonso, according to reports.

Los Blancos second-choice left-back Theo Hernandez left for Real Sociedad yesterday, and Lopetegui wants Alonso to help reinforce his defence.

He also sees the Spaniard as someone who can help keep first choice Marcelo on his toes following the Brazilian’s woeful display in Madrid’s 4-2 Super Cup defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Alonso began his career with Real Madrid as a youngster, and played under Lopetegui for Madrid’s B team in 2008/09 before moving to Bolton Wanderers.

The Spaniard then moved onto Serie A side Fioretina, where his displays saw Chelsea come calling.

And since his switch to Stamford Bridge in 2016, Alonso has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best full-backs.

Alonso has made 83 appearances for Chelsea over the last two seasons, scoring an impressive 14 times to help the Blues left the Premier League title in 2016/17 and the FA Cup last term.

The 27-year-old was also named in last season’s PFA Team of the Year.

Relations between Madrid and Chelsea are good at present after the two club’s agreed a part-swap deal for goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and midfielder Mateo Kovacic on deadline day.
