Rafael Benitez has spoken about Chelsea’s transfer plans for the summer, stating that the club plan to spend a kitty of up to £100 million on new signings to improve the quality of the squad.

The Spaniard has been the club’s interim manager since the sacking of former boss Roberto Di Matteo, and saw his side win the UEFA Europa League final against Benfica. Although the season has one round of fixtures left, Chelsea have already been linked to multiple players through the latter half of the season, and Benitez has seen the club already begin the summer transfer process.

The club have been linked with a pre-contract deal for Bayer Leverkusen, attacker Andre Schurrle, who missed out on the opportunity of moving to the club last year. The player has been talking about his future, and his club’s chairman had confirmed that they had received a concrete offer from Chelsea which was being considered.

Chelsea had also been linked with Atletico Madrid striker, Radamel Falcao, until French outfit Monaco stepped in and took care of a third party agreement, which has seemingly held up his deal with the Blues.

Owner Roman Abramovich has already started building for the future, with players like Victor Moses, Ryan Bertrand, Oscar, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata representing the future of the club. These players are not only talented, but also young, which means there is a need for experienced players at the club. This period of transfer activity is similar to when Abramovich last spent a fortune to buy Didier Drogba, Petr Cech, Ashley Cole and Nicolas Anelka, and produced a title winning side under Jose Mourinho.

With Mourinho’s return imminent, and with the reward of the Europa League crown, Abramovich plans to splash the cash again, to build a title challenging squad, rather than one which struggles to finish in the top four. This sends a big message to clubs like Manchester City and Manchester United, who will be alerted by Chelsea’s transfer movement.

According to Metro, Benitez revealed, “Chelsea will be much better next season because they will spend £100million and they will sign three or four players.”

“They have good young players like (Victor) Moses, (Eden) Hazard, Oscar, (Cesar) Azpilicueta, David Luiz, Fernando Torres, Oriol (Romeu), they are all improving and they all have potential.”

“The foundation is already there. The future is bright for them.”
