Players Who Were Caught Offside The Most In The Premier League Last Season

Strikers, wingers and all attacking players alike are always playing a dangerous game in football (especially the Premier League) – it bares fruit to sit in the shoulder of the last man, but players must be careful as to not be caught offside.

It requires an enormous amount of awareness and footballing IQ to keep the two in perfect balance – or you risk conceding possession and bringing attacks to a halt.

In this piece, we’ll be looking at the players in the Premier League who were caught offside more times than any other – including players from Liverpool, Brentford, Chelsea and Leicester City.

All statistics, facts and figures for this particular list have been taken from the official Premier League website.

Mohamed Salah

This may come as a surprise to some – legendary winger Mohamed Salah was caught offside on a total of 22 occasions for Liverpool last season.

However, given his dwindling pace and tendency to play off the last defender, it shouldn’t be too much of a shock for those who are in the know.

Despite these statistics, Salah still had a very good season for the Reds last season, scoring 19 goals and registering 12 assists in total.

Ivan Toney

Maligned forward Ivan Toney is up next – he had a bittersweet campaign last season. While he scored 20 goals in 33 games for Brentford, his extensive footballing ban shrouds his achievements in controversy.

Additionally, Toney was also caught offside 27 times for the Bees in the 2022/23 season – but this is far from his biggest worry right now.

Being Brentford’s focal point, he was generally their most advanced forward last campaign. Moreover, they also liked to hit teams on the counter – so this tally makes a lot of sense.

Kai Havertz

The 2022/23 season was a tough one for both Kai Havertz and Chelsea. Due to the Blues’ lack of a conventional striker, he was often deployed in that role, despite being unsuited for it.

Havertz’s movement off the ball is good, but he is much better at attacking the ball from deep – as such, he was often found in offside positions last season (28 in total).

Next season, it seems increasingly likely that Kai Havertz will be playing for Chelsea’s London rivals Arsenal – a clean break appears to be the best option for all parties.

Jamie Vardy

The downfall of both Leicester City and Jamie Vardy has been heartbreaking to see. Once one of the Premier League’s deadliest forwards, Vardy is now a shadow of his former self.

He once possessed electric pace, but it now seems to be rapidly declining. He was often unable to stay onside – being caught in front of the last man 29 times last season.

Whether Vardy is finished as a top-tier player remains to be seen – next season, he will be playing the Championship if he chooses to remain with the Foxes.
