The German started the Capital One clash against Chelsea on the bench as manager Arsene Wenger fielded a relatively second-string squad for the encounter, opting to rest the likes of regular first-team players Olivier Giroud and Ozil on the bench.

The French manager was forced to play the duo though as Arsenal trailed at home to their rivals. Even the introduction of Ozil and Giroud could not amend things as the Gunners fell to a 2-0 loss, which ended their adventure early on in the cup competition. Though the Capital One cup was probably not one of the top priorities for Arsenal, losing to their bitter rivals at home is sure to sting.

The loss could also have a domino effect on Arsenal’s confidence for the upcoming fixtures, as their first big clash of the season ended in defeat. They will now welcome Liverpool, travel to Borussia Dortmund and then to Manchester United consecutively. This defeat could have a lasting effect in their preparations for the next games.

Even after coming on in the second half, Ozil could not influence his team in reducing the deficit as Chelsea dominated the proceedings from the very beginning. The night did not end as bad as it would for Ozil, as he was reunited with his former coach Mourinho after the match. The two then shared a warm friendly hug and Ozil offered the Portugese his jersey which Mourinho gladly accepted, report Daily Mail.

The duo enjoyed a hugely successful time together while they were at Real Madrid. Ozil thrived under Mourinho and was Real Madrid’s mainstay in attack, which justified the fury which the club supporters and players showed when he was sold to Arsenal on transfer Deadline Day.

They also parted ways with Mourinho, though under highly controversial circumstances as he left the club with some bad blood between him and the Madrid hierarchy. With Mourinho and Ozil both settled into their new clubs, we will see many more reunions of them as Arsenal and Chelsea will face each other soon in the league, and maybe in the UEFA Champions League.
