Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believes the signing of Saul Niguez will help Chelsea to challenge for honours in all competitions this season.
The Blues managed to get a loan deal over the line for the 26-year-old at the very last minute last night, and Neville feels it will reinforce an area of the pitch where they are already well-stocked:
“The addition of Saul along with Romelu Lukaku makes them stronger and stronger and stronger. In the midfield with Jorginho, N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic they already look really strong. You only need two in there with the way they play but Saul’s addition means they can challenge on all fronts. It strengthens them enormously and makes them more formidable than they were at Anfield last Saturday.”
Niguez has said himself that he knows he will have a fight on his hands to get into the side, with N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic all competing for just two positions.
That competition for places will surely only be a good thing, with manager Thomas Tuchel wanting to see his players prove themselves week in and week out.
Squad depth will also be vital, as Neville points out, if they want to win multiple trophies. There is now a good case to be made that Chelsea can compete for the Premier League, Champions League and domestic cups.
