Some supporters were surprised when Chelsea opted to sign Mateo Kovacic on a permanent basis in the summer after an unconvincing first season at Stamford Bridge.
However, he has won over any doubters this campaign with a string of superb performances. The Croatian was one of the standout performers in the Blues’ 2-1 win against Aston Villa last night and supporters on Twitter have been quick to praise the midfielder’s form:
My player of the season thus far. Another awesome display tonight at a chilly Stamford Bridge. I thought 2 1 flattered Villa on night. Great goal by Mount too. Jack who????

Our best midfielder at the moment

£45m was a steal in this current climate. He's still only 25!

Kovacic is now dictating play in midfield and was the key man as Chelsea stepped up the tempo in the second half. Manager Frank Lampard is certainly getting the best out of him with both his passing and runs on the ball being put to good use.
Fans are certainly glad that the club managed to secure the player permanently despite the club’s transfer ban. As they had agreed a £45m option to buy before the embargo, the fact that he was already registered to the club because of his loan spell, allowed him to sign on the dotted line.
