Mourinho’s Intuition Seemed To Have Paid Off Big Time With Azpilicueta

With players like Hazard and Terry stealing the show with every match, names like Azpilicueta often go unmentioned. The Spaniard who is having an incredible season has proven to be both consistent and helpful despite being played out of position. The right-back who came to Stamford Bridge back in 2012 has become one of the most dependable youngsters Mourinho has at his disposal. Replacing Ashley Cole is not something everyone can do, especially considering the vast experience and excellent seasons the English international managed to add to his resume while performing for Chelsea.

According to Metro, Azpilicueta should be given a lot more credit for his performances. Despite starting off slowly and having trouble finding his place at the beginning of the season, the 24 year old has grown into one of the most reliable defenders the Premier League has to offer.

After being given a few chances when Cole and Bertrand were out on injuries, Azpilicueta became a team regular.

The Spaniard’s style is excellently balanced. He has the right pace needed to help Chelsea in both the defense and the offense. Playing him with Ivanovic is a match made in heaven as Azpilicueta can come round on the cover when the Serbian or JT or Cahill make an explosive charge upfield while still being able to make some runs of his own.

Even if he is still not quite on the same level as Cole when it comes to surging at the adversary’s defense, but he is disciplined and reliable in terms of holding down the fort. He has gained a lot of confidence over the past months and he will surely become even more confident if his place in Spain’s national team becomes a sure thing for the World Cup.
