Mourinho: Rooney Is My Only Transfer Target

Jose Mourinho has declared that Wayne Rooney will be his only target for the rest of the summer transfer window, as Chelsea wait for a reply from Manchester United for a bid which was made public by the Blues.

The former Real Madrid boss has been talking about his interest in Rooney, and confirmed that the club have made a considerable bid for the striker. However, United stand in a vulnerable position, with the known uncertainty between Rooney and new manager David Moyes. The Scot, who was named the successor of Sir Alex Ferguson, did not make the best of starts while talking to the press, as he suggested that Rooney would be used extensively in the case of an injury to his star striker Robin van Persie. The statement seemed to annoy Rooney, who is missing out on the club’s tour to the Far East due to a hamstring injury.

Mourinho has been fairly active with transfers so far, with three signings sealed earlier in the summer. The next season could be one of the last for club legend Frank Lampard, who once again proved the critics wrong, becoming the club’s all-time top goal scorer. The England international will be targeting the FIFA World Cup in Brazil next year, and knows this season could be vital for his goal. The signing of Marco van Ginkel from Vitesse was seen as a move to secure the future at Stamford Bridge. With Lampard’s final years at the club, van Ginkel is more than capable of settling in London as a successor to the former West Ham United midfielder. Another signing was that of Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen, in a move to increase competition for places in the Chelsea attacking line. The third signing was an experienced goalkeeper in Mark Schwarzer, who played his final year at Fulham last season.

According to the Daily Mail, Mourinho also said that Fernando Torres will be pleased with the club’s interest in Rooney, as competition for places would only improve performances of his players.

Mourinho said, “At this moment we have made what you know; that bid which was public and official and after that nothing else,

“But we are calm as we told you that we are calm because we are happy with what we have.”
