Mourinho Major Factor Behind Chelsea Move – Schurrle

The German finally sealed his switch to the London outfit for next season and thus ended one of the longest ongoing transfer sagas of this summer. The 22-year old was linked with the Blues even way before the previous season ended, and was being regarded as the first piece of Chelsea’s summer rebuilding puzzle post the Rafael Benitez era.

Chelsea moved swiftly and brought back Jose Mourinho last week to the club and the Portuguese himself did not waste much time as he acted as the catalyst in this deal, speeding up the entire process and making the striker his first signing since returning to Chelsea. The addition of Schurrle to Chelsea’s squad will make their attack all the more fearsome, given the fact that they already possess the likes of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard and are still looking to further add to their squad’s firepower.

Schurrle spoke to the local press after putting the finishing touches to his £20 million move and he was reported by Metro as saying that Mourinho was a major influence in his decision to come to the English Premier League. He said, “Mourinho has a great personality and is just a cool guy,”

“He was a big influence in my move.”

“He gave me a handshake when we were at Michael Ballack’s testimonial game, and said “it’s OK, soon you’ll be with me”. It gave me a lot of pride and was a great feeling.”

Now that Schurrle is pumped up to be playing under Mourinho, what remains to be seen next season is how this partnership will fare. Mourinho has previously nurtured one striker into a world class player in the form of Didier Drogba during his first stint at Chelsea. Can he reproduce his teaching and nurturing touch and perhaps take the same path with Schurrle and mold him into yet another world beater? Or will this partnership fizzle out?
