Mourinho Likely Will Keep Faith In Torres Next Season

Fernando Torres may yet have a chance to kickstart his Chelsea career after Jose Mourinho revealed the Spaniard will feature in his plans for next season, according to a report in Metro.

Chelsea finished third in what could have been a trophy winning season for the club had they invested in new strikers in the recent transfer windows. Throughout the season, Jose Mourinho downplayed the club’s chances of winning a trophy, but the football community is well aware of the mind games played by the experienced manager. Once Chelsea got their run of wins in the first half of the season, there seemingly was no stopping them from marching towards the title and possible Champions League success, but catastrophe followed soon after. Torres’ inconsistent performances returned after he came back from injury, and the striker hit a barren patch, leaving the door open for Samuel Eto’o to take over the responsibility of scoring goals. However, with their lack of quality in attack, Chelsea ultimately struggled to compete, and were knocked out of the Champions League, and beaten by Manchester City and Liverpool in the title race.

Torres has been named in Vicente del Bosque’s provisional 30-man squad for the World Cup in Brazil with the final 23-man squad due to be announced on May 25th. Torres’ performances in the World Cup, should he go, will likely have a say in how Mourinho uses him next season. The former Atletico Madrid player undoubtedly has the quality to go to Brazil it just depends on whether del Bosque still believes in him. Torres’ form in the Confederation Cup last summer in Brazil, where he was the tournament’s leading scorer, must give the striker a good chance of making it into Spain’s final 23-man squad.
