Mourinho Knows Courtois Must Play If He Wants To Keep Him

According to ESPNFC, Jose Mourinho has assured Chelsea supporters that the club will not struggle to retain the services of on-loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, after reports emerging from loan club Atletico Madrid suggested the keeper could decide to move away from London if not guaranteed first team football.

Courtois’ career began in his native Belgium with Genk in 1999, where he started his decade-long development as a youth player. The club offered then offered him a professional contract, and Courtois made 41 appearances for the club in the span of two years. In 2011, Chelsea came calling, and the keeper accepted the offer to join. However, the 21-year old was immediately sent on loan to Atletico to gain first team experience. Having made 97 appearances for Atletico through back-to-back loan deals, Courtois has established himself as one of the best keepers in the world.

With Petr Cech turning 32 this year, this could be his last season as the number one at Stamford Bridge. Despite having complete faith in Cech’s abilities to carry on, Mourinho will have to placate Courtois, who has reached a level where he will demand first team football and will not be happy as as understudy to Cech.
